Optical Design and Fabrication for an Extremely Large Telescope
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Three large segmented-mirror telescopes already exist -Keck I, Keck II and Hobby Eberly. Others are in work or have been proposed, including the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC), the Large Aperture MultiObject Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), the Mexican Infrared-Optical Telescope (TIM) and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). These projects serve as the starting point for the design of any extremely large telescope.

Optical Fabrication in the Large
Extremely large telescope concepts, with pupil diameter of 25-m and beyond, have been proposed in the past two decades but, so far, never materialized. First, ground-base telescopes were handicapped by atmospheric turbulence, which sets angular resolution and limits the benefit of size to collecting power. Second, the limited number of suitable optical substrates, the inherently slow and diffic...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملOwl Optical Design, Active Optics and Error Budget
We explore solutions for the optical design of the OWL 100-m telescope, and discuss their properties, advantages and drawbacks in relation to top level requirements. Combining cost, design, fabrication and functionality issues, and taking into account the scale of the telescope, we conclude that the requirements are best met with a design based on spherical primary and secondary mirrors. The co...
متن کاملAtmospheric dispersion compensation for extremely large telescopes.
Achieving diffraction limited imaging with future ground-based optical telescopes will require adaptive optics for correction of atmospheric turbulence and also efficient techniques for atmospheric dispersion compensation. We study the benefit of using a linear atmospheric dispersion corrector (ADC) coupled with a deformable mirror on a 42-m Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) operating in the VIRJ...
متن کاملControl Challenges for Extremely Large Telescopes
The next generation of large ground-based optical telescopes are likely to involve a highly segmented primary mirror that must be controlled in the presence of wind and other disturbances, resulting in a new set of challenges for control. The current design concept for the California Extremely Large Telescope (CELT) includes 1080 segments in the primary mirror, with the out-of-plane degrees of ...
